Is there a child on your caseload who has severe speech productionchallenges that leaves you scratching your head for new ideas andconcerned about their readiness for school work? The diagnosis andtreatment of children with CAS can be complex and challenging in anyclinical setting, and children with severe speech sound disorder are at risk forlater literacy challenges. The first step in developing appropriate treatmentgoals and building a comprehensive treatment plan is differential diagnosis.The next step is using a child’s progress in treatment to guide us in adaptingintervention to meet their changing needs. This course will review recentresearch that can inform clinical decision-making for children with CAS. Wewill consider assessment procedures, including standardized tools anddynamic assessment. We will discuss Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cuing(DTTC) as an evidence-based approach to treatment. And we will reviewtechniques for supporting literacy development in children who have severespeech sound disorder.
