As speech-language pathologists (SLPs) we wear many hats: educator, cheer leader, advocate, and quite often, counselor. Having a child with a severe communication disorder and being a child with impaired communication skills can be stressful for a myriad of reasons. In addition, the prevalence of children struggling with anxiety and depression is on the rise. Children with communication disorders have an increased risk of these mental health issues. However, the majority of courses in speech language pathology neglect the personal impact of a communication disorder and potential concomitant mental health diagnoses on an individual and their family. Furthermore, school SLPs often have to balance high caseloads, meetings, and paper work, allowing little time to communicate with families. This webinar will discuss tools and strategies that will enable SLPs to better listen, understand, and empower families and children with communication disorders. Strategies and tools will include how to implement the PERMA model, listen actively, and help children identify their strengths and build resilience..
