The procedures for assessing and treating children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) have improved in the last 10 years; however, we have limited information to support us in the assessment and treatment of bilingual children with CAS. In this seminar, we will apply what is known about CAS to children from multilingual backgrounds, using Spanish-English bilingual children as a framework.  The diagnostic indicators for differentiating CAS and severe speech delay or disorder will be discussed from a monolingual and applied to a bilingual background. Procedures for assessing bilingual children for CAS will be presented, applying current best practices for monolingual children to bilingual children, as well as exploring the use of parent questionnaires and work with interpreters. Principles for selecting appropriate segmental, phonotactic, and suprasegmental goals in children with CAS and who are bilingual will be presented. We will explore treatment approaches appropriate for CAS, including general motor learning principles and use of dynamic temporal and tactile cueing, exploring this treatment information for bilinguals.  In addition, we will explore decision-making for bilingual children, including which language or languages to treat in a bilingual child and how to support bilingualism. Video examples of treatment principles will be included.
